Today Nintendo have announced via Twitter that the Nintendo eShop for their consoles will be down from 8 AM to 8 PM today, December 9th. This downtime is rumored to be due to a pending update for the Nintendo 3DS handheld. The update, announced some weeks ago, will bring the Miiverse to the system as well as unify users Nintendo Network ID’s across both the 3DS handheld and Wii U console.
The Miiverse is a feature that has been available on the Wii U since launch and is a global community of Nintendo fans. The application allows gamers the world over to communicate, draw pictures, browse news and read forums based around their favorite videogames. The feature is actually a nice addition to the software that unfortunately hasn’t been touted all that much by Nintendo.
The unification of gamers Nintendo Network ID is the first step in Nintendo finally coming to grips with digital shops and should be a good start to finally allowing gamers to play and redownload their software on another system. This merging will allow gamers to keep their eShop wallet balance between hardware and allow for an easier process of purchasing digital content.
If this downtime is due to the upcoming OS update you can expect to be recieving this content later tonight.
