Early this morning Electronic Arts made the announcement, perhaps to the surprise of many employees, that 10% of the workforce at EA have been let go. In this “organizational update” the entirety of Popcap Vancouver and Quicklime Studio’s have been shut down with many others from various sections of EA. These layoffs follow earlier EA layoffs from several weeks ago as the company continues to move forward in a new direction and under new management. The studio sent out this press release to coincide with the news.
“In recent weeks, EA has aligned all elements of its organizational structure behind priorities in new technologies and mobile. This has led to some difficult decisions to reduce the workforce in some locations. We are extremely grateful for the contributions made by each of our employees – those that are leaving EA will be missed by their colleagues and friends.
These are hard but essential changes as we focus on delivering great games and showing players around the world why to spend their time with us.”
The industry doesn’t need more bad news, but it will continue to come. I wish everyone affected luck in moving forward.
