Markus “Notch” Persson likes to Tweet, and as someone who follows him, his feed is a good source of news and opinions on the industry, but recently he Tweeted a surprising number and I somehow missed it! “Notch” is of course the creator of Minecraft and founder of Mojang, and over the holidays he tweeted “Across all platforms, Minecraft sold 453k copies on dec 24! Wowzers!” That is a rather crazy number of copies, and several more millions rolling into the Mojang vault. Who on PC still doesn’t own Minecraft?! Or at least who on PC that still wants Minecraft doesn’t have it already? Minecraft is one of the greatest stories in gaming in years and it is nice to see it still selling like crazy.
To date, 8.7 Million copies have been purchased on the PC. On Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade service over 4 Million copies have been bought since summer and another 5 Million versions of the game on iOS and Android devices have been sold. These numbers are astounding and put Minecraft at around 18 Million copies sold since its inception in early 2011! With these numbers Markus “Notch” Persson may have been onto something with this game…maybe.
