The beginning of the end for THQ…

Sad breaking news here, I will just post from Polygon:

“Struggling video game publisher THQ announced today that the company has entered into a purchase agreement with a bidder to acquire “substantially all of the assets of THQ’s operating business, including THQ’s four owned studios and games in development.” THQ has also filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a Delaware court, the company says, to facilitate the sale of the publisher’s owned studios and current games in development.”

This sucks, flat out, it just sucks. THQ has been a studio with really great games such as Saints Row, Darksiders, and Metro, and also have really solid titles in the future such as South Park, Company of Heroes 2, and the sequels to Saints Row and Metro. Now they have been struggling for awhile, but this seems to be it. I can only hope a studio such as Square Enix purchases their properties and not a company such as EA or Activision.

  1. I actually think THQ will come out of this in pretty good shape in current plans go through. Yeah, someone like EA or the people who own Activision could sweep in buy some assets but I don’t think that’s likely.

THQ higher ups are acting and planning to come out of this intact and restructured, but still THQ. I think that’s the most likely outcome. So I don’t think it’s the end for THQ, but really the start of a new beginning (even if it is a painful process to get there).

At least their current announced and unannounced games are still in development and no one is being laid off.

Jason Rubin posted a pretty encouraging letter on the THQ site talking about the future and listing some other big companies who have gone through a similar Chapter 11 process and came out just fine.
